Legacy of an AASP Fellow: Dr. Gualberto Cremades

Dear All,

One year ago we lost one of our very own Sport Psychology Professionals & AASP fellows, Dr. Gualberto Cremades. Since 1994, Dr. C consulted with athletes of all calibers while significantly contributing to academic and professional knowledge in Sport Psychology.

In 2001 he began offering his mentoring services to prospective Sport Psych Consultants. I fortunate enough to have received his direct ongoing mentorship during my tenure at Barry University as part of their Sport, Exercise, & Performance Psychology Master’s program, as his wife said, “That Program was his baby, and he loved it. It is wonderful to see what an impact it has had on people.”

I am writing you today to raise awareness for Oligodendroglioma (Oligo), the type of brain cancer Dr. C fought so valiantly, positively, and peacefully for over 13 years. To raise awareness for Oligo Nation (ON) (an organization dedicated to fund research to fight Oligo), I am running in the Run Rabbit Run 50 mile Ultra September 9th in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

Oligo is an extremely underfunded form of cancer. Just seven years ago Oligo patients had no research and little resources to turn to. Together we can change that. ON has raised over four million dollars to fund research and recently funded a grant that allowed Stanford to include Oligo in immunotherapy clinical trials. Every dollar you donate makes a significant impact.

I encourage you to support ON and honor Dr. C’s memory by taking 4 minutes of your time to visit the Go Fund Me link below to donate and learn more about what Dr. C endured on his journey www.gofundme.com/50-miles-50-reasons-to-race-4-drc

ALL THOSE WHO KNEW DR. C, I have something IMPORTANT TO ASK YOU.

Can you share (on list or with me at, Zachary@VidicPerformanceConsulting.com) one way in which Dr. C made a positive impact in your life, sport, and/or career? I plan to compile the 50 best stories to then include them into a “short story” book for his two children, tentatively titled “Mental Performance: 50 Reasons & Ways to Get Through the Tough Days”.

We are the field and the people Dr. C dedicated his life to until the very, very end. I could not think of a better present from our field for his children & family.

Thank you for your time, before I go I’d like to share one of many stories about Dr. C that changed the way I look at life forever. I was lucky enough to help Dr. C coach his son’s soccer team. I’ll never forget one of our conversations after a particularly trying practice. He looked me in the eyes and asked, “What went well and what should we change?” I replied, “I think they had fun, but in regards to getting them all on the same page and performing efficiently, I’m lost at the moment. You’re the expert Dr. C what do you suggest?” He looked at me with the biggest smile and filled the space with the most authentic laughter, then said “Zac, at the moment I’m not certain either but there is one thing I know, we have to work together to do something different, and if that doesn’t work, we have to accept it and continue to keep trying, all the while staying positive and making fun the priority.” That statement for me highlights exactly who Dr. C was and who I strive to be, someone who always keeps pushing forward, no matter the setbacks, and does so with positivity and gratitude.

Dr. C kept trying and trailblazing in both the fight for his life and to make progress in the field of sport psychology; he persevered for as long as he could, working until the last days of his life. As members of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology, Sport Psychology Professionals, Mental Performance Consultants, etc. it is our time and responsibility to keep pushing forward, bringing awareness to our field, and making our profession more approachable to the public. Together I hope we continue Dr. C’s lifelong work of bringing the field of Sport, Exercise, & Performance Psychology to the forefront.

Please share this blog post with anyone who knew Gual. I look forward to your stories about him, and I know these anecdotes will be a meaningful tribute for his children to look back upon.

Best regards,

Zac Vidic
